Lasik eye surgery improves the eye vision and reduces dependence over the contact lens or eye glasses. Lasik is the laser eye surgery procedure, preferred by many eye patients, as it has faster recovery time and normal and regular activities can be resumed quickly, compared to the other laser eye surgeries.
Swimming After Lasik
After Lasik eye surgery, the patient has to wait at least for two weeks, before going for swimming, otherwise serious recovery issues and eye health issues may arise. No matter you wish to head down the shore or swim in a small pool, two week recovery period must be completed to wait.
Risks and Complications With Swimming
When the Lasik surgery is performed, small flap is created in the cornea and customized treatment is given with the help of advanced lasers. Though it is a shorter procedure, the eyes become sensitive during recovery for better healing.
When these eyes are exposed to the water, while swimming, the eyes easily get irritated and dried so easily. In addition to that bacteria and chemicals present in the swimming water can cause any serious eye problems or infections in the eyes.
Precautions Before and During Swimming
Though swimming is started after two weeks of recovery period, still, additional care needs to be taken, to protect the eyes from unclean and unclear swimming water. Follow certain suggestions and guidelines, before and during swimming.
- Before going for swimming take the opinion of your doctor, as the recovery time may vary according to your eye prescription. You need to get to know the exact condition of your eye and its healing state and it gives the clues about what activity to resume and what not.
- Wear goggles, though eyes are recovered to some extent, while swimming. Continue to wear these goggles, for at least a month, after resuming swimming activity. These goggles prevent the eyes from direct contact with irritating chemicals or debris, present in water.
- Initially, when you go for swimming, prefer to swim in chlorinated swimming pool, instead of other pools. After this phase, go for swimming in natural water bodies, like oceans, lakes, etc.
- Going for swimming is almost going for outing. So, you need to protect your eyes against the ultraviolet rays also by wearing sun glasses.
So, swimming aspirants need not worry for anything, as they can go for swimming and resume most of the low impact and medium impact water activities, after one month of recovery and gradually, high impact water activities also can be resumed later.
