After the Lasik surgery, it is important to consider the condition of recovery before applying the eye makeup, like Kajal, eye liner, mascara, etc. As the eyes become very sensitive during the process of healing, the eyes must be protected against the irritants, so that recovery can be impeded. Eye makeup, especially, kajal makes direct contact with the eyes and so it is important to avoid kajal, before and after a few days of the Lasik eye surgery. If any substances cause irritation to the skin on and out of the eye, it may lead to infection. So, the face has to be cleansed thoroughly after removing the kajal, eye liner, etc., the night before the surgical procedure.
After the Lasik surgery, the first six hours at least, the eye surface is smoothed over to a level, where there is hardly any sensation of any foreign body. The eye is so sensitive that even the slightest abrasion of a foreign body is felt by the eye and makes you conscious. The natural system of the eye produces tears to flush away the foreign body. So, in case any tiny foreign particles from the eye makeup is stuck on or near the surface of the scratch, the bacteria, which is adherent invariably to that tiny particle also can be grown, resulting in infection. The process of applying and removing the eye makeup also increase the pressure over the eye and it becomes an unnecessary poke into the eyes and poking the eyes may lead to the dislodging of the Lasik flap. This condition is possible during the recovery period after the surgery, not later.
The concern is that though most of the eye makeup is promoted as safe and hypoallergenic, these products still have the risk of irritation and infection post-surgery. For instance, tiny and small particles get trapped near or in the surgical site and result in inflammation and discomfort. So, ‘better safe than sorry’ saying is applied in this instance, as avoiding the makeup to the eyes can prevent the complications further. The process of applying the eye makeup is also sometimes harmful and irritates the eyes. For instance more pressure than adequate level on the eyelid may also hinder the underlying corneal flap healing. It may have negative impact over the outcome of the vision, as it causes discomfort.
It is recommended by the medical professionals not to wear the eye makeup, like mascara, eye shadow, eyeliner or kajal for at least four weeks of duration. And it is crucial to not apply for some more time, if you feel any discomfort for your eyes. To stay safe from any possible irritation, doctors advise to purchase new set of eye makeup and use after the Lasik surgical procedure. Follow it as a rule of thumb so that potential infections and complications can be avoided.
After a week, you can resume kajal and other eye makeup and never forget to apply it gently.
