According to the experts, Lasik eye surgery lasts long, as it corrects the vision perception permanently. However, there is always misconception and myth in terms of understanding, whether Lasik surgery lasts or not.
Lasik eye surgery corrects the vision perception, like astigmatism, farsightedness or nearsightedness, through reshaping the cornea with the help of laser and eliminates the cornea imperfections that result in astigmatism, farsightedness and/or nearsightedness. Since these imperfections are eliminated, there is no question of getting this problem occasionally. However, occasionally, the conditions of farsightedness or nearsightedness, the condition or problem progresses actually. Just like every living thing, the human organ, eye also keeps changing over the lifetime course. So expecting to use contact lens or pair of glasses for lifetime is not reasonable. The eyes keep changing after Lasik also, but they never get back to the condition, as bad as they had been in the condition, before going to the procedure.
The myth of Lasik being not lasting has some basis, called reality of presbyopia. Lasik surgery cannot prevent this condition and this condition can occur naturally to anyone, increasing with the age, especially beyond 40s. during the Lasik surgery, cornea is reshaped and it does not touch the lens of the eye. However, the problem associated with lens, which is placed behind the cornea cause the condition of presbyopia. According to the experts, even we born and maintain our eyes with perfect vision, it is more likely that most of us need reading glasses after our 40s. And the same condition can prevail to the people, who have gone through Lasik surgery also. The logic here is that the Lasik surgery does not influence the lens and so presbyopia condition and so it cannot worse or pre-pone the condition.
As it is mentioned above, Lasik can treat the correction of existing vision and cannot prevent the future changes that are quite common with the age, like cataract problems and presbyopia. Hence, it is important to note that in case there are problems arise after Lasik, in terms of vision, it can be because of cataract, presbyopia or other problems associated with the vision.
Ideally, the surgery procedure of Lasik has been designed and developed for lasting the results for a lifetime. The regression possible is however, from 3% to 5% of the Lasik laser eye surgery patients. Most commonly, people with higher prescription or longsighted would have regression. So, in ideal conditions, like when the surgery is performed with the protocols followed by experienced and skilled surgeon and enough post-operative care has been taken, the Lasik lasts lifetime, unless other eye related problems arise.
