When you decided to go for the Lasik, it is clear that you want to get rid of boring eye glasses and become independent from hard maintenance of the contact lens. Since the eyes are the most sensitive organs of the human body, there is no surprise and absolutely nothing wrong in getting confirmed about every move and every action that one tends do in day to day life. As part of it, it is usual even to know, whether sleeping after the Lasik surgery, is fine or not.
Sleep After Lasik
In fact sleep stands as the best remedy to get clear from the initial post-operation discomfort. This discomfort is usually because of the numbing drops that are worn off, after 4 to 6 hours after the Lasik surgery. The reason for applying the numbing drops is to ensure that the eye does not receive any pain, during the surgery. So, immediately after the surgery, if one can sleep after a couple of hours, this discomfort can be minimized and some of the patients, who have slept after the surgery have experienced this discomfort at minimum levels. It is also possible that people feel no or little discomfort, when they sleep immediately after going home.
Protection eye shields are usually given after the surgery and the patient has to wear during sleep. The shield helps the patient not to rub the eyes, unknowingly, while sleeping and prevents the eyes from great complications.
Why 6 Hours?
Six hours are needed immediately after the Lasik surgery as this time is the waiting time on epithelium topcoat that gets sealed over that layer’s edge. There should be no modifications or disturbances resulted during this period, as it will be very hard to change in the future. So, let the eyes be naturally functioning and the flap layer takes enough time to settle down to function back normally.
Sleeping is also good as the eyes don’t get dry easily and natural lubrication process continues. So, take a few days of time from your busy professional life, so that you can, you can spend quality time for yourself, while the corneal flap is healing. Sleep as much as possible, no matter it is a day or night. If you don’t feel like sleeping, take the head phones and start listening to pleasant music that makes your body and soul feel better. After a few days of this quality time and rest, you will thank your surgeon for the successful surgery and thank you also for the potential care you gave for your eyes that will improve your quality of life.
