Lasik surgery has much higher success rate and lower-risk potential. According to American Refractive Surgery Council, more than 90% of the Lasik patients are satisfied extremely as they end up with the vision of 20/20. According to the same council, no actual cases are reported about the occurrence of blindness after the Lasik surgery. Complications are very rare, but possible technically, after the surgery. Certain potential side effects, types of laser correction procedures or certain factors may increase the negative complications and respective odds. The reports of the US Food and Drug Administration indicate that the Lasik may cause loss of vision, in certain patients and this condition cannot be corrected, with contact lenses, glasses or additional surgery. It did not reach the blindness, according to the reports.
COMPLICATIONS
Usually complications arise are more related to the secondary issues and not because or direct causes from the surgery. For instance, post operation care is utmost important and any disturbances can result in infections that may even end up with blindness. After the procedure, the patient has to take utmost care for the eyes and to be conscious about all possible complications, like dry eyes, potential blindness that are possible to occur, in cases of inadequate care. However, vision loss is a very rare complication of Lasik and may occur even lesser than 1% of the patients. The reports also show that the usual complications are decreased night vision, halos around lights or starbursts.
Corneal Estasia
Technically, there is a possibility of going corneal estasia and the chances are minor, lesser than 0.2% of the laser patients. The causes of this condition are thinning out of cornea after bulging, usually from too much removal of the tissue. It may also lead to blindness also. If the patient undergoes this condition after the surgery, the solution is prescribing rigid contact lenses. In case the condition is extreme, corneal transplantation may be recommended.
Over or Under Correction of Vision
The possibility of this condition is lesser in Lasik compared to Lasek or PRK patients. The results are, in most cases, reversed, like nearsighted patient turns to longsighted and vice versa. This condition is reversible by performing another surgery, in case the cornea has enough thickness to withstand.
Visual Aberrations
It is a possible risk after the Lasik surgery, though the percentage of occurrence is lesser than 1%. The visual aberrations can be starbursts, halos or double vision, which are predominant during dim or night light and possible when the pupil is larger.
How to Prevent Major Complications?
It is always important to consult the ophthalmologist, prior to choosing the right Lasik procedure for you. Initial assessment is performed to determine the appropriate and suitable Lasik procedure for the patient. The success rates of the Lasik surgery keep improving and so the preference of the same procedures. Choosing an experienced and skilled surgeon is also an important factor. The Lasik outcomes do have great outcomes, while appropriate treatment protocol is followed with appropriate infrastructure and technology.
