Barrage laser is performed to strength certain areas of retina, which are weakened or to seal retinal tears. The threat of pain is common in potential patients, who are going to receive the treatment, may be because of the intense laser beams of laser light focusing directly over the retina.
There is nothing to worry about the pain, as there is hardly any pain felt by the patient during the procedure, since some special contact lens would be placed on the eye. The eye can feel only flashes of light, instead of intense laser beam. However, occasionally, there is subtle pain possible felt within the eye. Though the pain is very less, some kind of discomfort is felt by the patient, because it is unknown and never experienced pain. As this pain is never felt by the body, nervous system gets alert completely. However, this pain is very subtle. The patient may feel and see everything in magenta tint after the procedure and it gets continued for 3 to 4 minutes. After a few minutes, the vision and everything becomes normal.
During the procedure, high intensity light is focused on the eyes and it allows the surgeon and if possible the patient can also look all the interior of the eye, over the screen. For instance, the patient can see the clear structure of the veins and many more detailed stuff over the screen. However, because of a little discomfort within the internal part of the eye, one may or may not be able to look at the internal structure of the eye.
The patient could have the capability to perform the day to day activities after the surgery including the driving of the car. However, on the same day of the procedure, someone is needed to drive to take you home, as immediately after the procedure, the eyes do not get ready to function as normal.
Hence it is not the pain but a slight discomfort experienced during barrage laser procedure and it is absolutely safe.
