Lasik eye surgery, being a surgery operated with lasers, the second doubt one gets after its level of safety is, whether the surgery provides permanent solution to the vision problems or not. It is important to ensure whether the Lasik eye surgery offers either permanent or temporary results.
Analysis From Statistics
Statistics indicate that in most of the cases, the Lasik eye surgery offers permanent positive results, rather than temporary results. Statistics say that over 95% of the success depends on the success of the surgery and rest of 5% is dependent on various external factors. These factors can be the age, the gender, the previous eye vision condition and the overall health condition of the patient. And now the question following this confirmation would be what if results are temporary.
When The Results Can Be Temporary?
In a very few cases, the results can be temporary. The cases can be changes occurring in the natural lens exist with the eye, irrespective of the Lasik surgery conducted or not. The results of these changes could be return of astigmatism, farsightedness and / or nearsightedness, over time that causes blurry vision.
What Is The Solution?
In the cases, where the blurry vision is resulted, Lasik enhancement follow-up procedure stands as the solution. After this procedure, clear vision can be restored.
Which Statistics?
American Journal of Ophthalmology has also conducted a long-term study of laser vision correction and its stability. There were only approximately 6 percent of the patients needed to go for a Lasik enhancement, who underwent the Lasik eye surgery for myopia correction up to -10.0D, within 10 years.
Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery has published a study, related to a similar laser vision correction procedure called PRK and its stability, recently. Total 46 patients were considered and consistently monitored them for 18 years, by the researchers in the UK. All of them were nearsighted with prescription of an average of -4.86 D covered in the range of -2.75 to -7.37 D.
In the same follow-up period of 18 years, patients, under 40 years of age, when the procedure of Lasik was conducted had -0.54 average regression. Only -0.05 D average regression was found for them, when the patients underwent the Lasik.
Does Gender Matter?
Yes, statistics say that there is a significant difference of the results, with the gender. Men have experienced -0.08 D average regression over the period of 18 years and women have got -0.40 D.
So, in a nutshell, in most of the cases, the positive results after the Lasik eye surgery are permanent and in a very few cases results can be temporary, yet the temporary results can be well controlled.
