LASIK
Lasik is a simple laser surgery attempted for correction of vision, by correction of hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism. It is one kind of refractive surgery. The surgery involves the process of reshaping the cornea of the eye so that the visual acuity can be improved. The objective of the Lasik treatment is to provide an alternative to contact lenses or eyeglasses.
Who is the right person?
Though Lasik surgery is not a very major surgery, since it deals with the sensitive organ of the body, the eye, it is important to get hundred percent positive result, without affecting the natural vision of the eye. So, candidates for the surgery are chosen so carefully to ensure that the result is 100 percent accurate. So, the candidate for the surgery needs to have the following parameters satisfied.
- To have minimum of 18 years of age, however, preferably, lesser than 40 years
- Have stable vision, for at least the recent one year
- Have prescription of stable contact lense or eyeglass, continued for at least 2 years to 3 years
- Have no findings or history of corneal disease that is active
- Must not be nursing or pregnant
- Have no significant or serious eye problems or medical problems, like keratoconus, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma or corneal ulcers
- Have eyeglass prescribed by eye surgeon and stands within certain limits
Technically…
- The candidate is expected to have thick cornea reasonably, to the existing cornea, since reshaping of the cornea is involved in this refractive surgery. So, irregular shaped surfaces or very thin surfaces may affect the overall success and result and may even worsen the actual and present vision of the eye.
- The pupils of the candidate are expected not to be overly large, since it may increase the possible risks of halos, starbursts and glares. This risk is more, during the drives.
- The condition of the eye must be good for the candidate, to heal the problem properly. Candidates should not have any conditions, such as injury to the eye, infection, conjunctivitis or severe dry eyes. These conditions must be corrected prior to attempting the Lasik surgery.
The success of the Lasik surgery not only depends on the success of the surgery, but the overall health condition of the eye and body of the candidate.
