The total recovery time for the Lasik surgery is not very long and it varies from one patient to another patient. The best part is that the patients will experience improvement of vision in very short duration of time after the surgery. Recovery has to be analyzed in two ways, short term and long term.
Short Term Recovery
After the Lasik surgery, it takes a few days of time to get back to the regular and day to day activities. These few days of time is considered as short term recovery, during which the surgical site would be healed to an optimal level.
Immediately after the surgery, the patient experiences blurry vision and so cannot drive back home. So, the patient needs to come with a company, to drive back home safely. The patient will be sent back home with detailed and strict instructions to relax for at least 4 to 5 hours, after reaching home.
The first few days after Lasik, the patient experiences small discomfort or mild pain and some irritation within the eye. During these days the patient is given with the protecting shield or patch to cover the eyes to wear especially, while sleeping. It is important to wear during sleep to prevent any possible accidental rubbing the eyelid and rubbing. Eyes become sensitive to the light and blurry vision is what one experiences, in first few days of surgery.
You need to attend certain check-up appointments and visits to the hospital in 24 to 48 hours, after the surgery. Medicated eye drops are prescribed for preventing possible inflammation and infection. During this period of short term recovery, the patient should not wear contact lenses, though the vision is still blurry.
Long Term Recovery
Most commonly long term recovery after the Lasik surgery takes total 6 months for complete healing. It is common to experience many fluctuations during this recovery period. The progress of recovery is checked consistently through follow-up visits and become critical to total recovery and confirmation for the same. Usually, most of the patients start experiencing better vision after four weeks after the surgery.
The six month period of recovery usually includes many of restrictions for proper healing. The most important thing is that high impact activities must be avoided in these six months recovery period for better healing. Each and every post-operative instruction must be followed without fail.
Every human and so every eye is unique and there are 3 to 5% of chances for need for enhancement procedure. Need for enhancement procedure is decided by your doctor, on the basis of recovery achieved by far.
So, on an overall the surgery will give fruitful results completely after 6 months and till this period additional care is mandatory during the short term period. During the long term recovery period, special care is required, when any tough or hard activities attempted. And most importantly, if anything unusual is experienced by the eyes, the patient has to address the same usual thing to one’s surgeon and it must be done immediately.
