Astigmatism is one of the problems of vision, which does not get cured without the treatment. If it is left untreated, there are quite chances that quality of the vision keeps declining with the age. However, the decline or deterioration of vision happens very slowly, but sure to happen. When it reaches to a certain degree, it would be difficult for the patient to ignore its effects. Astigmatism is only condition of decline of vision, but not any disease associated with either eyes or overall body. The difference with the vision is that it becomes more blur than before.
Symptoms and Depth Perception
When astigmatism condition is started, one feels eyestrain or fatigue, initially. There is some disturbance one observes in terms of clear vision, not able to figure out the things exactly as before.
Depth perception stands as an ability of an eye to look and observe the things in the world, in three dimensions. There are certain issues related to depth perception and include difficulty in determining distance between two objects or opposite object’s proximity.
When astigmatism is affected to an eye, the lack of depth perception becomes a common and more likely symptom. Eventually, this condition creates a severe imbalance feeling. As a result, the outlines of the objects look blur. Blur is common and depth perception may or may not be added to this condition, however, the overall vision quality becomes poor.
Diagnosis
The condition of astigmatism is an indication that the eye is not round completely. Everyone has this problem, but it is within acceptable and tolerable degree. But when it increases to higher degree, the symptoms get started. This condition of eye is checked with a thorough eye exam. In most of the cases, the disturbance can be with the nearsightedness or farsightedness. So, after initial eye exam, the problem will be diagnosed and the treatment is prescribed.
Treatment
When the astigmatism is in initial condition, then eye glasses or contact lens can solve the problem and enable one to look without blur. And the condition may become worse over a period of time. Eventually, the overall vision gets affected. In such cases, advanced treatment may become necessary. Lasik is one of the potential treatments to cure the problem of astigmatism. This treatment corrects the shape of the cornea and resolve the issues related with depth perception and other blurring of images. And this treatment is recommended by the surgeons, only if astigmatism is in advanced stage and if it cannot be managed with wearing the eye glasses.
Laser vision correction can resolve most of the problems associated with the astigmatism and the vision becomes clear in a month after the surgery. The recovery period for Lasik is less compared to the other ones. During the recovery period, eyes must be protected very well and should not impose any physical pressure on it.
